Our Story

It all started with a Bristol board, a Sharpie and one line.

Motherland Designs stemmed from my artistic love of traditional Indian mehndi, or henna. As a high school student and art lover, I, Devika Tandon, adorned the hands of family and friends at weddings with intricate henna designs. Though this passion lay dormant for years, it rekindled a few years into my legal career in Los Angeles. Seeking an outlet beyond my demanding day job as an attorney, I craved something that grounded me and connected me to my roots and culture.

In March of 2018, I took the plunge. Armed with a 16x24 Bristol board and a bunch of Sharpies, I began to visualize a meditative piece reflective of my love for henna. One piece soon blossomed into six, each exuding simplicity and yet compelling intricacy. These free-hand creations, guided only by basic tools like a ruler and protractor, were a testament to the power of simplicity and the beauty of black and white.

Fast forward five years, and it was time to share these pieces with the world. Motherland Designs was born, embodying my culture, roots, and deep love for my motherland, India. Each artwork is a tribute to the enchanting essence of India, crafted entirely by hand, with every delicate flaw celebrated as a symbol of true perfection. The focus of these pieces is to ground the viewer, offering a space for meditation and reflection.

"I am grateful that I have both Canada and India as my motherlands; Canada, my birth country and India, the ancestry and culture that binds me. These connections that have continued to inspire, not only in my art, but in the way I interact with the world. I hope that my artwork moves you the way it has moved me and finds a cherished place in your home and heart."

Motherland Designs is a unique celebration of culture, blending tradition and modernity. Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of textures and artistic traditions spanning India, my pieces are deeply rooted in the local domain yet reach for global horizons.

My art is a release, a moment of reflection, and a reminder of the power of taking life one stroke at a time. Eventually, the pieces fall into place.

Stay tuned for more.
